Paper Piecing Horse Design

This paper piecing layout page was made from a kit.  I found it at  a local scrapbook store.  The name of the company that makes it is Time Flies.  There website is www.timefliesdesign.net.  It came with all the paper and patterns necessary to create this two page paper piecing layout.

Scrapbook Supplies: Horse Scrapbook  kit

Step 1 : Left Page
Take out one of the yellow/tan 12x12 papers.  You will use it mount the rest of the scrapbook page on.

Step 2
Take out one of the light green  and one of the dark green half sheets (6 x 12 in. ) of paper. paper piecing horse layout page You will use these to create the grass in the field.  You will need to tear about 1 inch off the top of the paper.  Tear it the long way.  Tear  it  so you create a mountain effect.  In other words don't just tear it straight across, curve it slightly down on the ends.  There will be a right and wrong side to this paper once it is torn.  The right side is the side which doesn't have two tones of paper at the top. You will mount these on the bottom of the tan 12x12 page.  The dark green page will have to be stuck down first.  Stick it about 2 1/4 inches from the bottom of the page.  Make a mark where you want to stick it down.  Then stick the light green sheet on top with the bottom flush with the bottom of the tan sheet.  Like it is shown here.

Step 3
Take the thick white strip (1 in.) and cut it into 4 pieces, 3 in. each.  Find the thin white strip (1/2 in. x 12 in.)    You will use these to make the fence that runs across the bottom of the page.  Stick the skinny strip 1   1/4 in. from the bottom of the page.  Stick two of the cut thick strips 2-3 in. from each side on top of the thin strip.

Step 4
Mount the white 5x7 picture mattes to the black and brown picture mattes.  Therepaper piecing horse scrapbook layout kit should be 3 picture mattes created.  Two black and 1 brown.  Stick down one brown and one black matte slightly tilted any way you like.

Step 5 :  Right Page

Repeat the first 2 steps for the start of the right page.  Set aside the pieces for the fence.  You will need to stick the horses neck to the page before you put on the fence.

Step 6

Cut out all the pieces for the horse.  They are all preprinted and labeled on the brown, black and white pieces of paper.  The black parts template, which is printed on white paper, will need to be stuck to the black paper before you cut out the pieces.  This way you won't have to cut out the pieces twice, once on white paper and once on black.

Step 7

Assembling the horse head.  Start with the brown oval horse head and stick the paper piecing horse layout idea pagewhite down the middle of it.  Take the small brown and black ovals for the nostrils and glue the black one, centered, on top of the brown.  Then stick them on the bottom of the head on a 45  degree angle.  Take the brown circle and black circle and place the black one on top of the brown.  Put the top of the black circle flush with the top of the brown circle so you leave a 1/4 in. lip around the bottom.  This will make the horses mouth and lip.  Stick the yellow piece of straw across this mouth piece.  Then stick this piece behind the brown head.  Find the black hair piece and place it on top of the white middle head piece.  The kit did not come with a pattern for the eyes.  I used a small oval cutter and my large tip for my hole punch.  I outlined the white oval eyes with black marker and glued the black pupils in place.  Then glue them wherever you would like on the horse head.  I angled them slightly and put the black pupils towards the middle.

Step 8

Putting the horse all together.  Take the brown neck piece and put it flush with the bottom and up to the right corner.  Put the black mane on the right edge of the neck.  Now you can stick down the fence.  Take the thin piece and glue it 1  1/4 in. from the bottom.  Glue the two thick pieces 2  1/2 to 3 in. from either side.  Set the horse head in place but, don't glue it.  You need to slide the ears behind it.  Take the 2 brown ear pieces and the 2 black inner ear pieces.  Place the flat side of the black inner ear pieces flush with the inside edge of each ear and glue.  I had to trim the black pieces a little to keep them flush with the brown ear piece.  (Before you glue the head in place you will want to glue down the black picture matte.  This way you will make sure you have enough room for everything on the page.) Slide the ear pieces under the horse head and glue them in place.  Now you can glue the horse head down.

Step 9

Putting on the title box.  Take the light brown (4 x 12 in.) piece of paper.  Tear it all around each side.  Remember about the right side and wrong side of torn paper.  Make sure to tear the paper with the same side up.  This way you won't end up with some of it showing the tear and some not.  This can be torn anyway you wish.  Punch a hole in each end.  I put eyelets in the holes but, this isn't in the original plans.  Take the jute string and unravel it.  I used only 1 strand through each hole.  Align the title box across both pages and cut it where it meets the edge.  Glue each piece with the torn two tone side down, pull the jute string tight and tape behind the  page.

That's it!  Admire  your  work of art.
